PROGRAM 2010
5th Edition

"Chopin and the metamorphosis of Romanticism"
The theme of the 5th edition of the Lake Como Festival pays tribute to two significant musical anniversaries of the year 2010: 200 years since the birth of Fryderyk Chopin and Robert Schumann, two great emblems of Romanticism.
The famed destination for vacationers and tourists, Lake Como, had a time of glory from the very early Romanticism, a glory that continues today. The enhancement of the artistic beauty of the territory is part of LakeComo Festival’s philisophy. More than ever, this philosophic idea goes hand in hand with the music program.
We have: tributes to opera; chamber music that presages Romanticism; Serenades and French music performed by international soloists such as Fabrizio von Arx, Anna Ferrer, Giovanni Manci, Claudi Arimany, Ramin Martinovich, Maurizio Barbetti, Alessandro Marangoni, Stefano Maffizzoni. We even have organ repertoire thanks to a fortunate and new collaboration with EurArt of Varenn, the Festival PianoMaster and the Province of Como.
The festival is always interested in contemporary music and present day. When we decided to choose as the theme of the 2010 season "Chopin and the metamorphosis of Romanticism" the concerts were planned not only with great Romantic literature, but also music by neo-romantic and contemporary composers. So for example we have: a program that combines the compositions by Mendelssohn, Liszt and Elena Ballario; a pianist and composer who will perform with her husband at Villa Serbelloni; and the unusual guitar-piano duo of Giovanni Seneca and Marco Sollini offering classics and their own compositions bordering on jazz.
For the first time the festival will present a "composer in residence": the American composer, orchestrator and pianist Michael Glenn Willliams. In addition to composing during his stay on the lake, he will present a recital of music by Chopin and his compositions side by side. Similarly Slovak composer Peter Machajdik will play his minimal and intense works for piano, cello and harp with a newly written composition for the occasion. The German Martin Münch finally will present his music and works by Chopin in an original program ironically entitled MünCHopin.
Another new feature of the Festival is a new venue for the concerts: the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, which, like Villa Cipressi in Varenna, will offer a buffet in conjunction with the concert. Two new location are also Palazzo Gallio in Gravedona and Palazzo del Vescovo in Dongo (seat of the International Piano Academy).
We will be hosted again by the beautiful Palazzo Agudio in Malgrate, Ascension Church in Cadenabbia and Villa Vigoni in Loveno di Menaggio: each location combines the beauty of the area and the opportunity to visit our bookshop dedicated to the lake and to artists’ CD organized by Enzo Pifferi Editore.
Various pleasures together, but above all music to revitalize the emotions that still make our lives unique and unrepeatable.
